Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Twenty individual amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues. The body can produce eleven of the twenty amino acids but the other nine can only be obtained from the diet. It may be necessary to supplement your diet with amino acids if you feel your diet may not provide these essential nutrients. The 22 amino acids, essential amino acids are marked with asterisks- Alanine, Arginine, Asparagine, Aspartic acid, Cysteine, Cystine, Glutamic acid, Glutamine, glycine, *Histidine, *Isoleucine,*Leucine, *Lysine, *Methionine, Ornithine, *Phenylalanine, Prolone, Serine, *Threonine, *Tryptophan, Tryrosine, *Valine.
